A short documentary portraying 'Projekt31', a self-governing youth and culture centre in Nuremberg, Germany. The project is on the verge of being evicted from their building. What would the loss of such a place mean to people and the city of Nuremberg?
This film accompanies the fight for preserving a cultural free space. Interviews with people active in 'P31', city councillors, and local creatives tell about their view on the cultural situation and their claims to the city.
// THE PROCESS
When I first emailed 'Projekt31' with my film idea in May 2020, I had no idea if the whole thing would work out at all.
Shortly after, I saw myself drawing, writing, tearing apart, re-planning, colourfully highlighting what felt like hundreds and hundreds of mind maps, spreadsheets, interview lists, schedules and concept drawings.
And this continued steadily throughout shooting period.
If I remember well, the first official day of film shooting was in July 2020.
The warmth and openness with which people at 'Projekt31'
received me and my camera, were unbelievable.
Soon, I was visiting the project regularly – as far as
the pandemic allowed events at all.
In fact, I am amazed how much of the "normal events" I was able to convey, although many of them could not take place at all during that time.
More and more I documented and interviewed people at and from the project, people from the Nuremberg city council, and people from the independent cultural scene in Nuremberg. At the same time, the whole house-situation around 'Projekt31' became increasingly tighter and more urgent.
Meanwhile my deadline to finish the film was approaching, and I was somehow trying to navigate between the last shooting days, the hours and hours of footage viewing, the post-production and the (emotional) pressure.
And then, in spring 2021, there came the day: The film was finished!
(At least without subtitles, still being finished in the following months, also continuously updating further news about the project's situation until 2022)
In June 2021, "Room to Roam – a project disappears' had the honour to celebrated its premiere in the Katharinenruine in Nuremberg.
And exactly one year later, the film went online.
Joy! Relief! But also quite some feeling of melancholy.
Just as if you have just finished reading that incredibly good book.
And now, it's just out there!
// SCREENINGS
2021: a year full of magical film screenings.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who participated  in "Room to Roam – a project disappears", who supported, screened and watched the film!
Since celebrating the premiere at Katharinenruine together with Filmhaus Nuremberg in June 2021, the film has been shown at many special venues: at 'Projekt31' itself, at Heizhaus Nuremberg, at the Testival by Quartier U1 , at Kult und Tumult Festival, at Z-Bau Nuremberg, at the TU in Nuremberg by AK Ohm gegen Rechts, and finally at the Germany International Film Festival in Berlin.
It's still overwhelming!
There was also an article about the project and the film published by the 'Nürnberger Stadtanzeiger'.
The film is available online since June 2022.
